Channelling the insomniac after-party vibe that James Blake and Bearded favourite Dewy Sinatra feature as USPs, Sevenoaks chanteuse Laura Wolfie unleashes a quiet storm tirade, rife with that '4am feel', pulses of Kiss Land's Soho synth, and the hacked'n'chopped beats of a coke-addled dancefloor. Though the R&B revival has seen a bevy of skyrocketing talent, Wolfie ensures her relevance by bringing dance back into the frame and using her own rap skills.
'Reflections' is her first outing – though she did dabble with covers of Bob Marley and Frank Ocean to reach this point – and is released today (October 14). Fleetingly, you can hear flecks of pop upstart Chloe Howl, or the sublime golden vocals of MKS – even a benzo'd version of shock-hop rapper Brooke Candy can be ear-glimpsed. Though there are fragments of the familiar, this still sounds very unique. Your interest is sustained over the duration due to her double-helix of winding emotions and gorgeous noises; though there's a hip-hop element, it definitely errs towards the Drake rather than the A$AP.
Utilising the dramas of teenage lust and the foibles of love, Wolfie uses her 21 years on the planet as a geyser of inspiration for her music in order to summon a heartfelt message. She harnesses a variety of feelings to ensure that the music she makes is not only impeccable on the surface, but that you can dig deeper and bond with her words as she reels off universally understood issues.
Laura Wolfie may only have one song on show for now, but the calibre is such that you can expect her to start releasing more soon in order to satiate the salivating masses pleading for more.
