  1. Ghostpoet

Live Reviews: Ghostpoet @ Scala, London 13.10.11

Scala is packed. That we're all here to see an act whose first album Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam was released in February with little fuss, is testament to the brisk rise of Obaro Ejimiwe aka Ghostpoet. As he shuffled onto the UK music scene, so he shuffles on stage wearing his trademark porkpie hat and bottle end glasses, and after a brief huddle with his band they head straight into 'Gaaasp' and we start to see what the fuss is all about.

  2. dEUS

Live Reviews: dEUS @ Koko, London 11.10.11

As he takes the stage at Koko, Tom Barman - front man and founding member of these Belgian art rock elders - immediately declares a full moon. Despite several people craning their necks to the ceiling we'll have to take his word for it.

  3. The Narcoleptic Dancers - Never Sleep (Bleepmachine/Capitaine Plouf)

Albums: The Narcoleptic Dancers - Never Sleep (Bleepmachine/Capitaine Plouf)

Almost brilliant, almost too sickly sweet

  5. The Raincoats - Odyshape (We ThRee)

Albums: The Raincoats - Odyshape (We ThRee)

During our time with this album, the second release from experimental '80's post-punks The Raincoats, we have learnt that there's something really quite special about them. This said, Odyshape is not in the least bit easy to listen to, with awkward harmony, jerky tempo changes and atypical structure aplenty, but the more you listen, the less important it becomes. Odyshape is an odyssey that leaves the listener completely unsatisfied, a textured masterpiece that positively oozes pent-up aggression, anxiety and all those confusing emotive grey areas that others daren't touch upon.

  6. John Cale - EP: Extra Playful (Double Six)

EPs: John Cale - EP: Extra Playful (Double Six)

John Cale is a true rarity – a legendary figure in the world of music yet still able to remain relevant and fresh today, some forty-odd years after he first appeared on the scene with The Velvet Underground.

  7. Apparat - The Devil’s Walk (Mute)

Albums: Apparat - The Devil’s Walk (Mute)

With the turning of the seasons, Berliner Sascha Ring – aka Apparat – brings us an album redolent of autumnal melancholy and portents of winter chill. Yet this 10-song set is as uplifting in its own way as kicking your way through a pile of technicolour leaves.

  8. We Were Promised Jetpacks

Live Reviews: We Were Promised Jetpacks @ XOYO, London 12.10.11

Tonight feels like a good night to be anywhere, as long as it's this room with these people. Tumultuous appreciation greets We Were Promised Jetpacks as they take to the stage in the fit of noise that is new album opener ‘Circles and Squares’, and the die-hard crowd is only frenzied further with the early outing of the ever-popular major sing-along track ‘Quiet Little Voices’.

  9. Pete and the Pirates

Live Reviews: Pete and the Pirates @ Scala, London 04.10.11

They’ve been around the UK three times this year, but Tuesday’s gig at Scala felt like something of a homecoming for Pete and the Pirates. They played their album launch show at Heaven back in May to a warm reception for their new material, but this time, with a couple of months’ worth of familiarity under their belt, the new songs really took centre stage.

  10. Arabrot - Solar Anus (Fysisk Format)

Albums: Arabrot - Solar Anus (Fysisk Format)

Filth hounds of hades Arabrot take an alchemical approach on this, their fifth album, via the writings of Georges Bataille, from whom the recording takes both its title and its lyrical and conceptual fascination with all things, solar, scatalogical, golden and filthy.
