The Entire City Issue Thunderous New Single Autumn Ritual Ascendant Liverpool alt. rock outfit The Entire City return with their third single, Autumn Ritual, a fierce slice of crepuscular gothic post-punk.

Available on digital platforms now, the duo of singer/guitarist Jamie and drummer Jams, launch the single with a show this Friday at EBGBs, Liverpool alongside Oh Well, Goodbye, Double Echo and Ade Blackburn (Clinic) DJ set (see below for details).

Directly inspired by Louis MacNeice’s epic 1938 poem Autumn Journal, the track shares the poem’s themes of loss, self-deprecation, and the futility of human rituals in the face of impending catastrophe. Tapping into a peculiarly British strain of ennui and sadness that writer Robert Macfarlane termed ‘English Eerie’, “the skull beneath the skin of the countryside”, the cut also evokes Edgelands: Journeys Into England’s True Wilderness by Michael Symmons Roberts and Paul Farley.

In keeping with its predecessors Cruel and You Are Not the Sun, Autumn Ritual was produced by Danny Woodward (BC Camplight, Circa Waves, Ladytron) and mastered by Pete Maher (Desperate Journalist, Maximo Park).

Redolent of Holy Bible-era Manic Street Preachers and the rhythmic dynamism of Foals, the track's spiky melodicism is reminiscent of early era Psychedelic Furs, the FX-laden guitar lines building to crescendo after crescendo.
