Live Reviews: Trumans Water @ Islington Mill, Salford 12.12.10
It's angular sounds on a knife edge ready to separate, disperse and arrive at a far away destination. The drums patter then crack providing little continuity. The guitars shred in truncated bursts. The opening tracks are so brief it's difficult to establish whether anything has started.

Live Reviews: Johnny Flynn @ Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London 10.12.10
A larger venue like the Empire in London may seem a little too cavernous for such intimate musical explorations such as that of the Flynn, but with great effort, and much shifting of the musical tables amongst the Sussex Wit, an unusually personal performance is witnessed by the silently gleeful crowd.

And so it was on this dark frost-laden night in Leeds that the dedicated few trudged out of their snowed-in homes and made the journey to an unlikely venue for a night of pure sacrilege.

Live Reviews: Cave @ Islington Mill, Salford 24.11.10
There's a rawness to Cave as they begin; not the throbbing of the guitar (or it’s cautious crescendo) but as the drums come crashing down. Untuned, beaten skins slightly out of sync clashing with the now beefy riffing. Add organ and bass guitar and the track takes free rock form. Through repetition the track gains momentum and the atonal vocals disappear into an abyss off stage somewhere.

Live Reviews: Portico Quartet @ ICA, London 03.12.10
A bitterly cold night had frozen their bones and forced the audience to wear the most embarrassing of leg warmers. However this did not prevent them from enjoying that much needed glass of Chardonnay at the London ICA, whilst eagerly awaiting the headline act Portico Quartet.

Live Reviews: Beach House/Lower Dens @ Concorde 2, Brighton 25.11.10
And we thought Baltimore was just big on house music. Tonight was an eye-opening showcase of the folky delights the East coast city has to offer too. Re-emerging after a couple of years off the musical radar, Jana Hunter has returned, with four-piece band Lower Dens in tow. It was a heavily instrumental set, with Hunters' signature, androgynous voice filtering in and out throughout in a dreamy fashion.

EPs: Seeland - Under Abraham’s Mind (LoAF)
There’s always something to be said for a genuinely great, daring and different cover version. Whether it’s Sonic Youth’s take on Madonna or Serafina Steer covering Brian Eno, hearing a magnificent re-imagining of a familiar song can be a thrilling and surprisingly affecting experience.
