  1. Le Juki

‘Music For Churches‘ @ St. Andrew’s Church, Brighton 02.03.11

Bring together a fabulous setting - a gorgeous 19th century church just off Brighton seafront - and an adventurous musical curator in the shape of Bunty Le Jule and you have the sort of artistically satisfying event the town does so well.

  2. Darwin Deez

Darwin Deez @ KoKo, London 03.03.11

The Koko No Re-entry 'Policy' becomes somewhat of a burden, as our beard is almost shaken completely off by over-zealous subwoofer levels, courtesy of main support Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. After a few tunes, the cold outside balcony keeps Bearded...well... fucking cold... as we await the man of the night.

  3. Gay For Johnny Depp

Gay For Johnny Depp/The Computers/Trails @ The Boileroom, Guildford 02.03.11

Guildford is hardly known for abrasiveness and/or attitude, never mind anti-establishment-fuelled punk rock. On Wednesday 2nd March however, it nervously welcomed hardcore fag-hags Gay For Johnny Depp and their touring partners The Computers and Trails for one of the most energetic and entertaining nights our little town has seen for some time..

  4. Clifford Village Band

Clifford Village Band @ Carpe Diem, Leeds 26.02.2011

Turning up to this gig, the only prior experience Bearded had of Clifford Village Band was an anonymous source who claimed they played ‘sort of pop-folk’ and that ‘they used to be folkier but now play more poppy stuff’. Obviously the lack of eloquence made us form some pretty brash assumptions that we might be in for yet another cheap Mumford bootleg, but these young, fun-loving students put on such a great show that all preconceptions had to be swept quickly aside.

  5. Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo

Emily Barker & the Red Clay Halo @ St Giles-in-the-Fields, London 24.02.11

Most will recognise Emily Barker as the musician behind 'Nostalgia', the song used in the opening credits for the acclaimed TV series Wallander. Hailing from the rural Bridgetown in Western Australia she has in fact been producing music since 2005, with her latest release Almanac finally pushing her into the limelight, and resulting in a stream of tour dates across the UK.

  7. Chancery Blame & The Gadjo Club

    A Valentine’s Massacre @ Hoxton Underbelly 12.02.11

For those music-lovers in search of a slightly edgier Valentine’s soundtrack than usual, the good folks at Peculiar Management showcased a recession-tastic three bands for six quid. How’s that for the Big Society, Mr Cameron?

  8. Portico Quartet

Portico Quartet @ Brighton Dome 18.02.11

There are times when the term 'support act' doesn't seem quite right, and the rousing cheers that greet Portico Quartet as they amble on stage in Brighton suggests plenty in the near sell-out crowd are here as much to see them as headliners Penguin Cafe Orchestra. And why not, given the Quartet's role in providing a wonderful take on what jazz can do in the 21st century?

  9. Harry Gyms

Harrys Gym @ Nation of Shopkeepers, Leeds 10.02.11

For anyone who doesn’t know it, Nation of Shopkeepers in Leeds is one of the places a lot of people seem to like to be seen at. In fact it was on this night that Bearded almost threw up after sighting a sticker saying ‘HIPSTER’ in big black capitals behind the bar. However, work through this and they actually put on some darn good bands every once in a while with tonight being no exception.

  10. Little Comets

Little Comets @ Norwich Arts Centre 17.02.2011

The Newcastle reared rock group Little Comets have had a storied past leading up to the release and subsequent touring of their debut album In Search Of The Elusive Little Comets. From guerrilla gigs in the M&S bakery aisle to being signed and then ceremoniously unsigned by Columbia records just over a year ago, there has nearly always been some form of hype following the band. All of these tenuous anecdotes are rendered irrelevant, however, if the goods can’t be delivered in a live setting, and in this case, it is in front of a surprisingly packed and diversely aged crowd at the Norwich Arts Centre, a venue which, in keeping with the agricultural heritage of the local area, is something of a needle in a haystack itself.
