  1. Cave

Cave @ Islington Mill, Salford 24.11.10

There's a rawness to Cave as they begin; not the throbbing of the guitar (or it’s cautious crescendo) but as the drums come crashing down. Untuned, beaten skins slightly out of sync clashing with the now beefy riffing. Add organ and bass guitar and the track takes free rock form. Through repetition the track gains momentum and the atonal vocals disappear into an abyss off stage somewhere.

  2. Portico Quartet

Portico Quartet @ ICA, London 03.12.10

A bitterly cold night had frozen their bones and forced the audience to wear the most embarrassing of leg warmers. However this did not prevent them from enjoying that much needed glass of Chardonnay at the London ICA, whilst eagerly awaiting the headline act Portico Quartet.

  3. Lower Dens

    Beach House/Lower Dens @ Concorde 2, Brighton 25.11.10

And we thought Baltimore was just big on house music. Tonight was an eye-opening showcase of the folky delights the East coast city has to offer too. Re-emerging after a couple of years off the musical radar, Jana Hunter has returned, with four-piece band Lower Dens in tow. It was a heavily instrumental set, with Hunters' signature, androgynous voice filtering in and out throughout in a dreamy fashion.

  4. The View

The View @ Tunbridge Wells Forum 24.11.10

In the before time, in the long long ago, before the gates of hell opened and all this cold and hazardous white stuff was unleashed from the skies, Bearded made it to Tunbridge Well’s The Forum for a room with The View.

  5. Torche

    Torche/Part Chimp/Chickenhawk @ Brudenell Social Club, Leeds 23.11.10

Hot damn do Chickenhawk know how to make Bearded happy. With their newly released Modern Bodies out earlier this month, the guys have been touring, promoting and perfecting their set since the release and it really shows. With the biggest audience reaction we’ve ever seen from a second support band, they clearly knew what they were doing.

  6. Bellowhead

    Bellowhead @ Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London 20.11.10

Love the mad-eyed drunken abandon of the Pogues but left cold by the recent plague of tasteful, polite and bloodless folkies? Then say hello to your new favourite band…

  7. Chickenhawk

    Chickenhawk @ Academy, Newcastle 10.11.10

Chickenhawk will destroy you if you stare at their riff for too long.

  8. Yann Tiersen

Yann Tiersen / Syd Matters @ The Junction, Cambridge 11.11.10

On a chilly evening in Cambridge, Bright-Young-Things and couples aplenty were in attendance at The Junction – presumably hoping to enjoy some of the delicious romanticism of the brilliant Yann Tiersen – the mastermind behind the soundtrack to the hugely popular film ‘Amélie’. However, we were all in for something on an entirely different level of romance…

  9. Dungen

Dungen @ Bar Academy, Islington 16.11.10

Tonight’s gig was enough to give musos a good name – with more chops on display than a butcher’s shop window. Opener Jim Molyneux is a virtuoso accordionist with a decent voice on him; while Wolf People’s heavy yet swinging take on folk-rock, like Fairport Convention meets Cream, went down a storm.

  10. Midgar

Midgar vs Proceed @ The Pav Tav, Brighton, 10.11.10

It has been a good year so far for Midgar. With the release of their mini album Lead Your Children To The Sky, videos for the album track and upcoming release ‘Karmic Retribution’, this tour with Proceed was a nice way to round it all off.
