  3. Swimming

Swimming / Poppy Perezz / Fixtures @ The Louisiana, Bristol 24.11.11

Some bands are better than others. Some bands seem better than they are until they are held to account by their superiors. Some bands surprise you. Everything is relative. A band can earn your respect or they can think themselves above you and then lose it. Ah well, some of this has something to do with tonight’s gig, some of it probably doesn’t. Some bands simply blow you away.

  6. Wild Beasts

Wild Beasts @ Manchester Cathedral 16.11.11

Indeed, Wild Beasts’ sexually charged themes might be at odds with Manchester Cathedral’s sanctity tonight, but my word, what a pairing it’s turned out to be. The riveting clicks of ‘Devil’s Crayon’ are the only sounds we hear from Limbo, Panto tonight, but what lacks in their wonderful debut, is made up for their richly resounding follow-ups. “Please forgive me,” Hayden apologises as he holds his drink to the roof. With a set like tonight, there’s nothing to apologise for Hayden.

  7. Summer Camp

Summer Camp @ Jericho Tavern, Oxford 15.11.11

The first signs of Summer Camp were of a band who preferred to let their identities take the backseat to their carefully constructed brand of retro-loving chamber pop, hiding themselves behind dated teen movie samples, yellowing found images and vocal-masking production. Whilst sounding brilliant on record, its charm came through distance and faded memory, a quality perhaps hard to find in the small surroundings of Oxford’s Jericho Tavern. But Summer Camp have returned on their debut album with a stronger and more direct sound perhaps more suited to a live show.

  8. Lanterns on the Lake

Lanterns on the Lake @ The Lexington, London 22.11.11

Literally everyone is here. Not an age, creed or persuasion isn't spoken for. The Pattern Theory set the scene brilliantly, and as the violins and numerous apparatus are sound checked the crowd waits, anxiously creeping closer to the stage.

  9. Dum Dum Girls

    Dum Dum Girls @ FAC251, Manchester 13.11.11

“Manchester’s our favourite place to play,” says a rather confident looking Dee Dee tonight. It’s a suitable compliment really: these four girls from different parts of America, flying all the way here, to a city which has really provided a huge imprint on the sound of their music. Tonight’s special for the crowd in Factory tonight as well.
